The end of the year is the perfect time to donate to Goodwill! The simple act of cleaning out your closets and donating to Goodwill will help us help others with free job training and education programs. Goodwill has some simple tips to help maximize your donations.

“Goodwill is so appreciative of our many donors in the community,” said Arie Mahler, Donations Manger for Seattle Goodwill. “There are some small steps that can make a big difference in increasing donation value  – such as using a rubber band around the box to keep all the pieces of a puzzle together so none of the pieces get lost."

Keep shoes in pairs.
Tie the laces together or put a rubber band around the pair so they stay together.

Keep games & puzzles together.
If you’ve got a board game or puzzle in a box, put a rubber band around the box so it’s secured and pieces don’t escape. This can also go for anything with small pieces that comes in a box—like some tools and craft kits.

Bag up clothing and linens.
Keep clothing and linens separate from the other parts of your donation.

Keep pieces of electronics together—and let us know if they work!
Wrap the cord up, and tape the remote to things like DVD players and other electronic devices. Let us know if the device was working the last time you used it or not with a little note taped to it, too.

Wrap and label fragile items.
If you’re donating something that can break easily, wrap it up in paper, put it in a box, and let us know that it’s fragile by marking it as such.

Put the little pieces in a bag.
Bringing in a disassembled piece of furniture? Put all the little nuts and bolts in a plastic baggy and secure it to one of the bigger pieces. This same thing can apply to things like small kitchen appliances!

Taking these simple steps before you donate can help maximize the value of your donation, and maximize the impact your donation makes for Seattle Goodwill students!
