Glitter Sale 2012: Why You Should Get Up Early and Get in Line

I’ve been going to the Glitter Sale for a few years now, and it’s one of my favorite annual events.  My girlfriend and I meet for coffee at 6:30 a.m. to fuel up, then we head to the Dearborn store and get in line with all the other early-rising, crazed thrift-shoppers.  We bring chairs and blankets to keep comfy and warm, and then chat up our neighbors while waiting for the doors to open at 9:00 a.m.

What would possess us to do this?  First of all, it’s a lot of fun!  I make an event out of everything I do.  But second, access to the jewelry counter is first-come, first-served, based on your number in line.  The lower the number, the better your chance of scoring an amazing piece of bling.

Here’s how it works: In order to shop the jewelry counters at the Glitter Sale, you need a shopping number, which this year will be on a lanyard passed out to everyone in line.  Think of it as a golden ticket!  Imagine if everyone were allowed to grab at the jewelry like they grab at the clothing.  It would be chaos!  New this year, the number on the lanyard will also get you into the sale, which means you don’t have to physically wait in line once you get your lanyard.  You can shop the main store, keep your energy up with coffee and food, or do whatever you please until your number is called to enter the Glitter Sale!

Once in the doors, the staff will begin calling out numbers for jewelry counter shopping, “Anyone with numbers 1-20, please come to the jewelry counter!” The lower the number, the earlier you get your crack at the goods.  Once your number is called, you are assigned a Goodwill staff person as your personal shopper, and you can take your time perusing the treasures in the cases.

Here are just a few items I’ve acquired at the Glitter Sale in years past.

So here’s my advice: If you like the thrill of the hunt and have a bit of a competitive streak, then get your beauty rest on Friday and meet me in line at the crack of dawn!

So how early are we talking? I'm ALL about the this and really want to get a great spot in line. Any suggestions on what time I should actually make my way over to Goodwill?

Hi Anthea - It's hard to say. The first 250 people in line are the first ones in the Glitter Sale, and to be one of those people you probably have to be in line before 6 a.m., but this is just an educated guess. Regardless of when you get in the sale there will be great merchandise to choose from, since we re-stock the sales floor throughout the entire weekend.
