Our Mission at Work: Meet Oscar

Oscar’s most recent purchase at the Burien Goodwill store was special. It was a frame to hold his new GED certificate. “I am really proud of myself,” Oscar said. “I did not think I would be able to get my GED.”

Oscar had wanted to get his GED for a number of years, but first needed to take some English as a Second Language classes. He had studied civil engineering when he lived in Mexico, but after coming to the US in 1989, he found the language difference to be a barrier. Oscar was shopping in the Burien Goodwill store when he saw a flier about the job training classes, and came back later to register. The classes seemed like a challenge, but he worked with the Goodwill instructors and studied hard. This February Oscar obtained his GED because of the supportive instructors. “I am really grateful for their help,” he said.

Oscar wants to keep pursuing his education and hopes to study mechanics. “If you get a GED you can get a better job and life. I would recommend the Goodwill job training program.”

Oscar is continuing to take some computer classes at the Burien Goodwill Job Training & Education Center along with classes at a community college.

Congratulations to Oscar and to all of our JTE graduates from all classes and programs. You're the ones who benefit the most from what Goodwill offers and I'm proud to be part of a company that makes these sorts of stories happen.
