Cheryl Harrison volunteers as an instructor's aide at our Job Training & Education Center in Shoreline — and has been doing so for nearly a year. She found Goodwill while pursuing opportunities to get more involved with direct, hands-on service in the community. During her time with Goodwill, she’s helped out in almost every type of computer class that the center has to offer, including Computer Basics, Microsoft Word, Outlook & PowerPoint, and Excel.
“What I really like about volunteering is that I learn so much,” she said, adding how much she’s learned about Microsoft Excel since she began helping in the classroom. “I learn a lot on a lot of different levels. I get to meet all kinds of different people—from all walks of life—from all different places in the world.” In regards to how her students are provoking her own personal growth she said, “They remind me that people are not just where they came from. They are teaching me how to see a more step-by-step gradual progression of how to learn new things. As I’m helping, I’m learning—and I have to learn to be able to help!”
Lisa McElroy, an instructor at Shoreline Goodwill’s Job Training & Education Center and Cheryl’s volunteer supervisor, is thrilled to have her helping the students. “Having Cheryl as a volunteer has been fantastic,” she said, “All of the students know her, and they’re comfortable asking for help—which is a huge help to me. She’s just been marvelous.”
Cheryl is passionate about volunteering, and serving others — and “absolutely” recommends to anyone, to get involved in volunteering in their community. “I love it,” she said.
