Frequently Asked Questions - Bank Skills & Financial Services Training Program

What is the Bank Skills & Financial Services Training Program?

Bank Skills & Financial Services Training is a new program offered by our Job Training and Education Department. The training curriculum was developed with input from leading banks like Bank of America and U.S. Bank, and is designed to give participants the skills and training needed to get a job in the banking industry.

Why focus on banking?
The U.S. Department of Labor reports that the banking industry generally has many entry-level positions available in office and administrative support positions. Many banks are searching for people with specific skills in areas of need like check proof operation, vault management and customer service.

What are students taught in the Bank Skills & Financial Services Training program?
Participants receive training in proper banking terminology, computer fundamentals, data entry, account reconciliation, proof operation and other pertinent skills.

What about attitude?
In today’s banking industry, as in all customer service oriented professions, a good attitude is important. All activities require teamwork, good communication and a willingness to work hard to achieve goals. Students will receive “soft skills” training from our Goodwill Works program. Soft skills are the skills, abilities and traits that pertain to personality, attitude and behavior rather than to formal or technical knowledge.

Is the Bank Skills & Financial Services Training program appropriate for everyone?
We require that participants have basic English, math and computer skills before enrolling in the program. Participants who need improvement in these areas will be referred to our adult basic education programs.

How long is the Bank Skills & Financial Services Training program?
The program lasts eight weeks, with classes held for two hours each day Monday through Thursday.

What kinds of jobs are available to graduates of the Bank Skills & Financial Services Training program?
Upon completion of the class, participants will work with our Job Placement Specialist and employment partners like Bank of America, Key Bank and U.S. Bank to pursue jobs in banking or financial industries. Some of these positions are: proof operator, cash vault representative and customer service teller.

Currently, this program is offered at our Seattle Job Training and Education Center, with future plans to expand it to other Goodwill Job Training & Education Centers.
